The embodiment of photoworks of Olga Polesovshchikovа, the graduate of photo art department, finds many analogues among the author's technologies. She uses format camera 13х18 without a shutter that assumes working with the camera’s lid (it is influencing in a special way the quality of fixing of the filmed object) . The subsequent stages of the image appearance are hand-made; it is a non-standard black-and-white press on bromsilver paper with a plasticity of daggerotype image. This technology is based on system of processing emulsion materials by Yuriy Babich
Such tools, in my case are not "technology for the sake of technology." “Retro effect” in my works is also not my aim. The choice of these tools and techniques of image processing first of all reflects the philosophy I stick to.
First of all, shooting in a large format means the extreme degree of realness, in comparison with a human eye. Camera fixes semitones in a different way, it has other focus qualities, it possesses hundred percentage of informativeness. Thanks to all these qualities largeformat camera forms the other type of reality, highly detailed elaboration and clearness, just the other type of presence!!!
However this realism I achieve by means of the format, is important as only one of the components of the final result. Another component is mystical element. It is introduced in a processing stage (process of development of a negative). Developing process can take from 2 to 8 hours and it is difficult to predict the final result. Thus the absolute realism is combined with the mystical alchemy of photography in my works. In such a way I mystify reality, imparting some magic features to it.
The way I go while creating each image is probably the longest and the most difficult. I find here the parallel with oriental practice. Oriental practice is a long, intensive process on a way of achievement of inner harmony. For me photography is also the way of finding inner harmony. It is both - self-knowledge, and the way of interaction with world around, as well as the best possibility to focus the attention of the spectator on a surrounding reality without breaking its integrity.
Oriental plots are very often in my works; India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Himalayas, "Labyrinths of the Japanese box", "Playing with netske". At the same time the plot is not so is important for me. I film a stone, a kiwi, a royal family and I concentrate mainly on process of a birth of a picture. Thus, I "do not become attached" to the object of filming...
The life in a large megacity is full of vanity. Format filming does not stand the bustle, it demands meditative mood and thoroughness. This contradiction sometimes yields unexpected results. Even when I leave from the oriental theme, my toolkit and the approach bring me back. Invariably something oriental is present in quite European plots.
Any process with the creative approach has one common thing-unpredictability of result. It is characteristic for photography as well. The unpredictability range in a method I use, reaches its maximum. Each picture is a risk to lose the image completely. In comparison with standard filming (average or a narrow format) – the efficiency of large-format filming is several times lower: one makes around ten shots a day. It will be a good result if two from them will be good. I risk consciously hoping to receive what inspires me most of all.
Key concept for me is the anthology of photography. What happens with the image inside, how this magic comes to life, what is the secret of photographic alchemy? Every time I "cognize" the image, but this process is endless... And every shot for me is a new discovery.
